Referring a talent
For shepherdsUpdated 29 Sep 2026
When to open a door for a talent, and how to refer them honestly so it helps everyone.
A referral from you can open a door no application can. It also carries your name, so make it one you're comfortable standing behind.
When to refer
Only refer people you'd hire yourself
One coffee chat is a short look at someone. If you're not sure yet, offer another chat or some feedback instead.
Tell them if the fit is uncertain
Be honest with the talent about their chances and about what you can and can't do. A referral is never a promise of an interview or a job.
How to refer
Send the hiring manager a short, honest note
Say how you know the talent (for example, from one coffee chat), what you saw and why you think they're worth a conversation. Keep it to a few lines.
Give the talent the words to follow up
Tell them who to contact, what to say and what to attach. You can send this in Messages after your chat.
Check back after two weeks
Ask both sides how it went. A quick loop back keeps the door open for the next person you refer.
Keep it confidential
Only pass on a talent's CV or plans with their permission, and never share anything they told you in confidence.
